Rachel Teeger returns to the Baba Sali, Rabbi Yisrael Abuchatzeira, in a cooler register than her first canvas. The white hood is laid on in broad knife strokes, its drawstring picked out in blue, and it frames a face built from short passes of green, lemon yellow, and pale violet. The eyes sit low beneath heavy lids, the gaze turned inward rather than out. The beard falls in deep blue, threaded with magenta and rose.

Behind the tzaddik the ground breaks into rays: cobalt, white, yellow, green, and a sudden band of pink, all driven outward from the head like light through a prism. A single painted button holds the blue robe at the chest, a plain domestic note inside so much color. The paint stands in ridges; the surface reads as much by touch as by sight. Study in Blue was completed in 2024 and now lives in a private collection.
