In Kislev 5557, the winter of 1796, a book came off the press in Slavita. Its title page called it Likkutei Amarim and, beneath that, Sefer shel Beinonim, a book for the ordinary Jew who is not a tzaddik. It said the whole work was founded on one verse: ki karov eilecha hadavar me’od, beficha uvilvavcha la’asoso. It is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it. The world came to call the book the Tanya, after its first word. Here the Alter Rebbe looks up past that first title page, and the verse stands beside him one word at a time, red at the top, green at his shoulder, the whole promise on one wall.The original hangs ready.
