The Rebbe turns slightly from the viewer, his gaze steady beneath the brim of his hat. Teeger builds the face in cool blues and greens, warmed by passages of yellow at the brow and cheek. The beard is laid on thickly, ridges of white paint carrying traces of violet and pale green. The hat, black in life, is painted in strokes of ultramarine, teal, and deep red. Nothing in the picture rests. Every mark of the knife moves outward from the figure.
The title recalls the promise given to the Baal Shem Tov: the redemption will come when your wellsprings spread outward. The Rebbe made that spreading the work of a generation, and the composition takes the promise literally. Currents of blue circle the shoulders and break at the lower edge like water leaving its source. Rose, coral, and green scatter toward the margins of the canvas. The tzaddik sits at the center of the flow, unmoved by it, the point from which it all proceeds. The original is available; inquiries are welcome.
