The palette is nearly withheld. Black hat, gray coat, a beard built from ridges of white oil laid down with the knife. The Rebbe’s gaze comes straight off the canvas, pale eyes steady under the dark brim, the brow warmed by small passages of ochre. Around him the ground breaks into short strokes of gray and white, more weather than wall.

Into this restraint the artist has set actual gold and silver leaf. It gathers on the brim of the hat, flickers through the beard, and scatters across the background in torn fragments that shift as the light moves. The metals do not decorate the portrait; they interrupt it, the way splendor interrupts an ordinary hour. Silver cools the shadows at the shoulder. Gold burns quietly at the right edge. It is a study in what endures and what glints, held together by a face that has looked at generations. The work now lives in a private collection.
