Rachel Teeger paints the Lubavitcher Rebbe at close range, the face turned toward someone just beyond the frame. The gaze is lowered and attentive, the expression near a smile. A slate blue fedora and dark coat frame the white beard, which Teeger builds in thick knife strokes of cream and grey. One hand rises, open, as if receiving a word or offering one. Every surface is worked in oil laid on with the palette knife, ridge upon ridge, so the light catches and moves.

Around him the ground breaks into color: rose, orange, spring green, sky blue. Within it float Hebrew letters, an aleph beis scattered across the canvas like sound made visible. They are the letters of the mivtzoyim, the Rebbe’s ten campaigns, Torah carried out to the street, tefillin wrapped on any Jew willing to pause. The letters press close to the figure and drift to the edges, still traveling. The original is available. Price on request.
