The face arrives first: the gentle smile, the white beard built in thick ridges of knife work, the rose tinted lenses that were his alone. Rachel Teeger sets Maran Rav Ovadia Yosef against a ground of gold leaf, and around the dark turban of the Rishon LeTzion she drives long arcs of crimson, blue and silver, a turning field of paint that circles the head. The turban itself is layered stroke on stroke, deep blue over near black, a pale band catching light at its edge.

Below, the robe carries the weight of office. Gold embroidery climbs the blue ground in vines and blossoms, each leaf raised in relief, so that the garment reads almost as metalwork. Yet the painting rests in the face. The eyes behind the pink glass are warm, amused, fully present: the posek who held the whole of Torah in memory, meeting the viewer as a grandfather might. The original is available; price on request.
